Studio Lighting Experimentations

The photos you see below are all results of my time experimenting in my studio lighting class.

Most of these photos were created to tell a story, while other photos are strictly abstract images that I created out of my own curiosity. The photos range from having a limited color range in order to dramatize a chosen object, to vivd images bursting with color in order to embody the feeling of joy.

ALEXIS’ STORY

Alexis has been my closet friend for years now, so I knew right away she was the subject I wanted for my first creative project. The project theme was an exploration of a person’s self-identity.

A total of five images were captured in response to five questions regarding Alexis’ self-identity. To properly represent her response given to the questions listed below, many factors had to considered when in the studio: lighting design, what the person is wearing, how the person is posed, what props are being used, and other compositional design choices as I decided what it was I was trying to reveal about the subject.

The five questions are as follows:

  1. Who am I?

  2. How do others (family) see me?

  3. How do I want to be seen?

  4. Do you ever feel constrained by your emotions… like they overtake you sometimes?

  5. How do you feel when you realize you are completely on your own after college, and have to rely on yourself?

1. Who am I?

  • Goofy & happy!

2. How do others (family) see me?

  • They still worry about me after losing my mom while I was in high school. I feel like my dad still thinks of me in a way that he feels sorry for me, as if I am in the same emotional state as I was when it happened. (Blue)

  • Of course I miss her every single day, but I want them to know that I am comforted now, and am healing. (Orange)

  • I want them to view me as the free spirited and bubbly personality that I am, instead of still feeling sorry for me. (Pink)

  • (Blue, orange, and pink gels were used to illuminate the background to represent her feelings.)

3. How do I want to be seen?

  • Warm, cozy, and inviting.

4. Do you ever feel constrained by your emotions… like they overtake you sometimes?

  • Absolutely!

5. How do you feel when you realize you are completely on your own after college, and have to rely on yourself?

  • Unsure and a little worried. Definitely hesitant.

THIS IS NOT TRASH

This series shows how an object that normally becomes trash, has hidden beauty within it. In this series, aluminum foil takes on many forms and dances with light to help prove my theory.

The first image represents how it is typically seen – sharp and crumpled up after use.

The second image shows how it can be seen as something soft and fragile, rather than something rigid.

The third image shows the circles of foil that came from punching holes into the foil. These pieces represent the idea that everything is not what it seems, and that you can always view objects in a new light. These are many small pieces that come together to make one big piece.

LONG EXPOSURE EXPERIMENTS

I have wanted to try my hand at long exposure, abstract photographs for the longest time. I finally had the perfect opportunity to play with studio lighting equipment and some pretty cool objects.

RESULT: some of the coolest photographs I have ever taken!
